Energy Management Centre(EMC) as consultants supported Mankulam Grama Panchayth (near Munnar in Idukki District, Kerala, India) and completed the revamping and grid interfacing work of 110kW(2x55kW) Mankulam (Pampumkayam falls) Micro Hydro Electric Project as a deposit work. The Hon’ble Minister for Power, Government of Kerala Shri. Aryadan Muhammed dedicated the project on 10th May 2012 at 1200 hrs at Mankulam, thus becoming the very first local body in India to sell power to the state utility - KSEB - through a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The plant is synchronised to the 11kV grid of KSEB through a step up transformer.

The plant has two 55kW turgo-impulse turbines with a net head of 70m and a discharge of 0.1 cumecs each. The annual generation estimated is ~4.5 Lakh kWh. Local people are trained for running the plant thus giving employment opportunities in addition to the voltage improvements in the locality, thus reducing losses to the utility. The revenue thus generated by the Panchayth would be utilized for their developmental activities.
